social construction of reality
It was a very interesting lesson during class regarding the saliva and spit experiment. Our minds are trained as to conform with whatever everyone else is doing and so when an action comes up that's out of the ordinary, we feel that it's weird and out of character. It's so interesting to me to see how our minds are trained to think based on the influences around us. That is just one of many reasons why community service is such a great opportunity to explore outside our comfort zones and to stretch a helping hand where one is needed. The people we interact with around us every day construct how we view and experience the world and it's just important that people realize that they can go off on their on paths in life and start new adventures for society to follow. People need varieties of ways to live their lives. It's so interesting with the response from the blog Sal put up about how changing someone's ethnicity, race, or sex could change a situation of interaction dramatically. We are so trained like robots to think certain ways about certain types of people based on these categories. The question is why? Society is the major influence in our lives and people express what is considered normal and what is wrong and unhealthy.

I agree with the comparison to robots. You are rigth that humans need variety, but the way we live we have become like robots. We are told what is noraml, what is cool adn what is funny. If you really think about it nothign we do is shaped by us ourselves.
ReplyDeleteSteven I totally agree with you. Our lives, hobbys, and appearance are all formed by what is considered the social "norm" in our community.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you that we are sort of like robots, doing and following what the majority of the people do.People do this because they dont want to be an outcast so they start thiking the same way as the majority.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you saying that we are similar to robots. We are trained by people that we don't even know, and may never know. It's easier to conform to what is "normal" and not have to worry about being different. I think that, especially no a days, people just want to fit in. So even if we think something is okay, but the majority think it's not, we go along with everyone else. I think the service will be a good way to express your own thoughts and ideas on the world.
ReplyDeleteI like how you said that the way we react to different situations is based off of how those around us react. People are constantly striving to fit in, and it is rare to see individuals break away from the norm just to prove a point. Also, I agree that community service is a great way to get people out of their comfort zone and more involved with the community through new experiences.
ReplyDeleteIt sucks how we are all like robots, just going through our daily lives not doing anything out of the ordinary. I think we need to change that and leave our comfort zone and explore new things in life.
